As an official popcorn mom people often ask me, “What’s the best way to make popcorn?” The answer is simple. I usually respond, “Whatever works best for you!”
There are a variety of ways to make popcorn, and luckily all of them are user-friendly. Microwave popcorn could not be more convenient (my son’s favorite); hot air and electric poppers work beautifully (my husband’s favorite). And then there’s the tried-and-true stovetop method, my personal favorite. I suggest you master all three methods and then you’ll never be far from a bowl of fresh popcorn!
Since microwave popcorn, electric and hot air poppers come with their own specific instructions, I’ll leave those to you, but here’s my recipe for the stove-top method. It’s super easy and can be made for just pennies a serving. Watch me make it!
Canola oil or vegetable oil
• Warm a heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan, using just enough to cover bottom.
• Add enough kernels to cover bottom of pan in a thin layer. Replace lid and return pan to heat. Listen for popping sounds and when you hear the last few pops, remove pan from heat. Carefully remove lid and empty popped popcorn into a large bowl.
• Season popcorn to taste. I like to experiment with different seasonings. Try sea salt, cracked pepper, Parmesan cheese, dried herbs, and more. Be creative, and let me know if you come up with a tasty topping!
